Harnessing Collective Insight in Modern Mountain Warfare: Advancing Cold Weather Operations, the Digital Battlefield and Technological Adaptation – CANCELLED
From December 1st to 4th, 2025, the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence (MWCOE) will host its annual Lessons Learned Workshop in the scenic town of Bled (Hotel Astoria), Slovenia. The event will focus on enhancing NATO’s capability to operate effectively in mountain and cold weather environments through shared operational insight, innovation, and technological integration.
Aim
To enhance NATO’s operational effectiveness in mountain and cold weather warfare.
Purpose
To merge real-world operational experience with emerging defense technologies, enabling participants to identify current challenges and shape practical, forward-looking solutions for mountain and cold weather warfare.
Objectives
- Identify operational best practices in mountainous terrain and cold climates.
- Assess the use of digital command systems in complex terrain.
- Evaluate the integration of emerging technologies, including unmanned systems.
- Contribute directly to updates within the NATO Mountain Warfare Community of Interest (COI).
Participants
This workshop will bring together subject-matter experts, operational commanders, and technology specialists from across the Alliance — sharpening NATO’s collective edge in surviving and operating in the most demanding conditions.
Workshop Focus Areas
- Cold Weather Operations: Improving readiness, survivability, and operational endurance in harsh winter and high-altitude environments.
- Digital Battlefield Management: Leveraging advanced command-and-control systems to enhance situational awareness and operational decision-making in complex terrain.
- Technological Adaptation: Integrating next-generation capabilities, particularly unmanned aerial systems, to increase effectiveness in mountain warfare.
Why “Collective Insight” Matters
In today’s multi-domain environment, no single unit or nation holds all the answers. NATO’s strength lies in its ability to learn, adapt, and evolve together. This workshop exemplifies that principle — ensuring every participant both contributes and leaves with actionable, field-ready solutions.
Outcomes
The event will conclude with a consolidated set of best practices and recommendations. These will directly support the evolution of the NATO Mountain Warfare Concept and contribute to the broader NATO Warfare Development Agenda.
