How JTACs operate in High-Altitude and rugged landscape

This week, we hosted an in-depth discussion with the JTAC’s from the 152. letalska eskadrilja (152nd Fixed Wing Squadron is part of 15th Aviation and Air Defence Brigade, 15. brigade vojaškega letalstva in zračne obrambe) of the Slovenian Armed Forces, focusing on the various possibilities and challenges when employing JTACs in mountainous terrain.

During the meeting, experts explored various employment scenarios, analyzing how JTACs can effectively operate in a high-altitude environment where terrain, weather conditions, and visibility significantly impact their roles. The discussion included the tactical positioning of JTACs, their mobility across the rugged landscapes, and the specific communication challenges posed by mountainous terrain, such as radio signal interference and beyond line-of-sight issues.

A key element of the conversation was the integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into mountain warfare operations. With their ability to provide real-time reconnaissance, target acquisition, and aerial support, UAVs represent a valuable asset aimed to enhance the effectiveness of fire and logistic support in difficult terrain. JTAC’s role in airspace management was thoroughly assessed, considering factors such as battlespace coordination of manned and unmanned aircraft, navigation challenges, and operational security concerns.

These foundational discussions have laid the groundwork for further exploration of dedicated working groups, where the insights gained will be further refined and expanded. The findings will be incorporated into NATO MWCOE’s ongoing research and doctrine development, ensuring that JTAC training and operational planning reflect the latest advancements in mountain warfare tactics. Ultimately, the discussions will shape the curriculum of NATO MWCOE courses, enhancing the readiness of JTACs and other military personnel operating in mountainous environments.

By continually adapting and evolving strategies, NATO MWCOE remains committed to improving operational effectiveness in complex terrains, ensuring that allied forces are well-prepared for the unique challenges of mountain combat.
