New Video: Systematic Snow (Cover) Diagnosis (SSD) & Small Block Test

A reliable assessment of snowpack stability is a critical component of military avalanche risk management and directly influences planning, decision-making and mission execution in winter mountain operations. In a new, operationally focused training video, our avalanche expert and developer Georg Kronthaler presents the methodological foundations of Systematic Snow (Cover) Diagnosis (SSD) and explains the correct application of the Small Block Test under realistic field and operational conditions.

The video demonstrates how structured terrain and snowpack observations can be systematically collected, analysed and integrated into the Military Decision-Making Process (MDMP). It highlights how snowpack-related information can be transformed into a reliable decision basis for movement planning, risk mitigation and the execution of operations in complex winter mountain environments. The presented procedures directly support the work of the Mountain Cell by providing a common, methodologically sound framework for assessment, risk evaluation and command advice.

A particular strength of the video is the consistent linkage of theory, field application and Lessons Learned derived from training and operational experience. The content is aligned with proven procedures as applied and further developed within the Mountain Risk Management framework of the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence.

This training product is primarily aimed at military commanders, staff officers, instructors and subject-matter experts seeking to enhance their competence in avalanche risk management and to further professionalise decision-making in winter mountain operations. It underlines the NATO MW COE’s commitment to testing, refining and making available field-proven methods and contemporary approaches for multinational forces operating in mountainous terrain.
