Project Mountain SkyEdge: Integrating UAVs into Mountain Combat Operations – A New Challenge for the NATO MW COE
Friedrich Oelboeck, Ana Slevec, DDIR/COS2025-02-17T07:15:12+00:00The NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence (NATO MW COE) is launching a groundbreaking initiative called “Mountain SkyEdge” to integrate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into tactical and operational procedures for soldiers operating in mountainous environments.
This effort builds on the success of the inaugural UAV workshop held in September 2024, which laid the foundation for exploring UAV applications in mountain warfare. The key findings from this event have been compiled into a comprehensive report, serving as the cornerstone for the next phase of development.
Strategic Vision 2025–2028
To drive innovation and operational effectiveness, the NATO MW COE has committed to a structured roadmap that will enhance UAV capabilities over the next three years. This strategic vision includes refining tactics, improving training methodologies, and establishing doctrinal frameworks to optimize UAV deployment in complex and rugged terrains.
A pivotal component of this initiative is the launch of a pilot course titled “UAV Tactics for Mountain Warfare,” set to debut in July or August 2025. This course will be conducted as an internal test within our staff to evaluate its effectiveness before broader implementation. Designed to become a staple of annual training, this program will provide military personnel across all levels—platoon, company, battalion, and brigade—with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in UAV applications. The course will focus on enhancing reconnaissance, surveillance, fire support, and communication strategies in high-altitude operations.
This initiative represents a decisive step forward in modernizing mountain warfare capabilities, ensuring that UAV technology becomes a force multiplier for soldiers facing the unique challenges of mountainous battlefields.
Future Developments and Knowledge Sharing
To consolidate and disseminate knowledge gained through these initiatives, the NATO MW COE will publish a detailed handout on UAV usage in mountainous terrain by the end of 2025. This document will serve as a practical guide for military units and organizations looking to integrate UAVs into their mountain operations, offering insights into best practices, technical considerations, and operational strategies.
Through continuous research, training, and knowledge sharing, the NATO MW COE is positioning itself as a leading authority on UAV applications in mountain warfare. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the Centre is ensuring that UAV technology is effectively leveraged to enhance operational effectiveness, safety, and mission success in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
Expanding UAV Applications Beyond Combat
In addition to its military tactical applications, UAV technology holds significant potential for sustainment and logistical support in mountain warfare. As part of its broader scope, the NATO MW COE is committed to exploring how UAVs can enhance cargo transport, avalanche control, and search-and-rescue (VS) operations. These topics will be key focus areas during the winter and summer risk management workshops, where experts will discuss innovative ways to integrate UAVs into high-risk environments.
The ability of UAVs to deliver supplies to remote locations, conduct rapid assessments of avalanche-prone areas, and support life-saving operations makes them invaluable assets in both military and humanitarian contexts. By incorporating these aspects into ongoing training and research, the NATO MW COE aims to expand the role of UAVs beyond combat and into comprehensive mountain operations.
We warmly invite Subject Matter Experts from NATO nations and partners to participate in this Mountain Risk Management Workshop Winter 2025.
