Visit of the German Ambassador to the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence

On 19 August 2025, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Ms. Sylvia Groneick, and the Military Attaché, Colonel Frank de Waele, visited the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence (MW COE). During her visit, they received a comprehensive briefing on the Centre’s mission and vision, with particular focus on previous and upcoming activities, developments, and the future operational capabilities of mountain troops.

Focus on Doctrines, Training and Future Structures

The presentations highlighted that the MW COE functions not only as a training and expertise hub, but also as a driving force in the development of doctrines, tactics, and procedures for operations in mountainous environment.

Acknowledgement of the Centre’s Role

The Ambassador expressed strong interest in the topics presented and emphasized the importance of multinational cooperation, as well as collaboration with civilian organizations and companies, while also recognizing the high value of German expertise in mountain warfare. The MW COE makes a vital contribution to strengthening NATO’s capabilities in mountain warfare, and Germany will continue to actively support this important work.

Strengthening Partnership

Through her visit, the Ambassador reaffirmed Germany’s close partnership within NATO and underlined the MW COE’s role as a key institution for training, research, interoperability, and international cooperation in the field of mountain warfare.
