56th IAMMS Congress
The 56th International Association of Military Mountain Schools (IAMMS) Congress, hosted by the 132nd Slovenian Mountain Regiment (132 SVN MNT REG) and co-hosted by the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence (NATO MW COE), took place in Slovenia from 3 to 7 June 2024, showcasing significant advancements in mountain warfare and training. Approximately 100 participants, including School Commanders and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from 15 countries, attended the event.
The congress featured engaging presentations and practical demonstrations. On 4 June the NATO MW COE presented its mission and recent achievements, followed by an in-depth look at a digital tour planning application designed to improve operational efficiency in mountainous terrain. Participants took part in hands-on demonstrations of essential mountain warfare techniques, including rope techniques, obstacle crossing and supporting combat operations with pack animals. A highlight was the session on the principles of parachuting and paragliding in mountainous environments, emphasizing strategic and practical considerations for aerial mobility.
The event continued on 5 June with ferrata climbing activity in Mojstrana, fostering camaraderie and practical skills in mountain operations. After the climb, the group made a short walk to the magnificent Peričnik Waterfall. Participants then visited the Slovenian Alpine Museum, gaining insights into Slovenian mountain history and the cultural significance of alpine exploration. The congress concluded with a visit to the Planica Nordic Centre, a renowned winter sports centre famous for its ski jumps and world-class ski flying events. This visit provided an insight into the physical conditioning and training methods essential for both elite athletes and military personnel in cold, mountainous environments.
