NATO MW COE and EU P&S MTI Strengthen Cooperation in Mountain Warfare

From 26 to 27 May 2026, the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence hosted a coordination meeting with representatives of the EU Pooling & Sharing Mountain Training Initiative at the NATO MW COE in Poljče.

The meeting provided an important platform to further strengthen the long-standing cooperation between both organisations in the field of mountain warfare. The discussions focused on the synchronisation of ongoing and future activities, the alignment of respective programmes of work, and the identification of areas where mutual support can further enhance common efforts.

A key aspect of the meeting was the continued development of mountain warfare capabilities in response to the demands of the modern battlefield. Participants underlined the importance of adapting training, doctrine, lessons learned processes, and capability development to current and emerging operational challenges. Particular attention was given to the need for closer cooperation in order to prepare mountain troops for complex, technology-driven, and multi-domain environments.

The exchange also highlighted the value of joint projects, shared expertise, and coordinated contributions to future training activities, conferences, and conceptual work. Through this continued cooperation, the NATO MW COE and the EU P&S MTI aim to support the further development of mountain forces and ensure their ability to operate effectively in demanding terrain and under modern combat conditions.

The meeting once again demonstrated the importance of close international cooperation, practical coordination, and a shared commitment to advancing mountain warfare within the NATO and EU framework.
