Efficient Cargo Transport in Mountainous Terrain: Cooperation with Drone Passion
The company Drone Passion , with which the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence (NATO MWCOE) has signed a Letter of Cooperation (LoC), recently invited the NATO MWCOE to take part in a practical exercise focused on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based cargo transport. This invitation provided an excellent opportunity to deepen the exchange between military and civilian experts and to gain valuable insights into how a specialized company manages cargo transport using UAVs in mountainous terrain.
Drone Passion has outstanding expertise in planning and conducting UAV cargo flights in alpine and challenging environments. The company is specialized in enabling safe and efficient transport of material under demanding conditions—where conventional transport methods often reach their limits.
A particularly impressive aspect of this cooperation was Drone Passion’s ability to ensure complete logistical support independently. Without relying on any existing infrastructure, the company successfully organized power supply, transport and setup of equipment in the field, as well as reliable internet connectivity. Thanks to their meticulous preparation and provision of state-of-the-art equipment, the entire day proceeded smoothly and without incident.
Over the course of approximately ten hours of flight time, a total load of around 7 tons was moved. The maximum payload per individual flight reached 45 kilograms. This successful operation once again demonstrated the efficiency and capabilities of modern UAV systems for cargo transport in mountainous terrain, as well as the importance of establishing this capability within military structures—such as a mountain brigade.
The insights gained from this cooperation will be systematically evaluated at the MWCOE over the coming months and shared with the Community of Interest (CoI) through courses, workshops, and training sessions. To ensure a practical and high-quality knowledge transfer, Drone Passion’s expertise will be actively integrated into the doctrinal work.
