Currently, that is in the period from 9 May to 20 May 2022, the Austrian Armed Forces are conducting the international mountain exercise European Mountain Thunder 2022 (EMT 2022). In total, more than 800 mountain soldiers from 5 different nations are training combat in mountainous terrain.
The NATO MW COE is using this opportunity to evaluate the training regulations under the leadership of the Deputy Director, COL Ruggero CUCCHINI.
On the first day of the European Mountain Thunder exercise, the COE evaluation team was briefed on the largest training area for mountain troops in Europe by the commander of the training area, COL Klaus ZWEIKER. The training area in the Austrian mountains has 9 different firing ranges and offers the possibility to conduct mountain combat up to brigade level.
In the next few days, the nations will practice a variety of mountain techniques.
