Innovation as a Mission: MW COE Among NATO’s Leaders in Transforming Ideas into Operational Impact

We don’t follow trends. We set them.

A recent article from NATO’s Allied Command Transformation (ACT) titled Innovation and Interoperability: The Strategic Impact of NATO’s Centres of Excellence highlighted 16 Centres of Excellence (COEs) across NATO as key innovation leaders. Among them is our very own Mountain Warfare COE (MWCOE).

Being featured is more than a recognition—it’s a call to action.

From Concept to Combat-Relevant Capability

The ACT article emphasizes a clear transformation goal for COEs: to serve as practical testbeds for emerging technologies, concepts, and solutions—not just in theory, but with operational relevance.

At Mountain Warfare COE, we’re fully committed to that goal.

Innovation is no longer optional. It’s mission-critical.

Across NATO, COEs are delivering tangible outputs—tools like ALEXO, ETACS, and HEIMDALL—that are not only experimental but actively shaping capability on the ground.

And we already are.

From Vision to Delivery: What We’re Building

Our momentum is strong:

  • We have launched a project focused on accelerating interoperability—a strategic pillar for NATO’s future operations.
  • We are preparing a drone operations course, set to launch next year, to bridge the gap between high-altitude mobility and emerging unmanned systems.
  • And we are working on something bigger: the Mountain Warfare COE Synthetic Integration environment—our hub to collect, test, and evolve all our experimentation and innovation activities.

We are already recognized as one of NATO’s most innovative Centres of Excellence. The MW COE is not just keeping pace with change—we are at the forefront of it.

As we approach our 10th anniversary, we are preparing a demonstration of our innovation capabilities that will showcase how we turn ideas into operational effects.

Stay tuned—the best is yet to come.
