Winter Mountain Risk Management Workshop: NATO MWCOE Leads the Way in Mountain Tech Integration.

Winter Mountain Risk Management Workshop: NATO MWCOE Leads the Way in Mountain Tech Integration.

The final two days of the workshop were dedicated to the practical application of the concepts and technologies introduced in the preceding sessions. This hands-on portion took place in the area surrounding the Zelenica hut in the Karawanken Mountains, providing an ideal environment for real-world demonstrations in challenging Mountainous Terrain.

Throughout these days, invited industry partners had the opportunity to present and demonstrate their latest innovations at a variety of designated stations. Among the many highlights was the live demonstration of the e-ski system, which generated considerable interest among participants due to its advanced capabilities and practical applications in mountainous terrain.

A particularly noteworthy demonstration was the live execution of a logistical supply mission using a heavy-lift cargo drone provided by the company Drone Passion. The drone successfully transported equipment across a distance of more than 2.5 kilometers, overcoming a height difference of 650 meters. The complexity of this operation was further underscored by the in-flight transfer of control from one drone operator to another — a procedure that allows for extended flight operations and precise navigation in difficult environments. The drone demonstrated its ability to carry payloads of up to 38 kilograms, further emphasizing the potential of unmanned aerial systems in mountain warfare logistics and resupply operations.

During the night-time training segment, participants examined the use of infrared (IR) drones equipped with artificial intelligence-supported software designed to detect and monitor individuals in difficult terrain and low-visibility conditions. This cutting-edge technology demonstrated promising capabilities for search and rescue operations and real-time battlefield surveillance.

Georg Kronthaler, a renowned civilian Subject Matter Expert in avalanche assessment, supports the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence (MW COE) in establishing standards for risk mitigation in winter conditions. During a recent workshop, Mr. Kronthaler introduced key principles and methodologies for assessing avalanche risk in localized areas. His approach enables more accurate and timely evaluations, which are essential for operational planning in mountainous terrain. The integration of the LARA Application further enhances this process by facilitating the efficient transfer of information to the Mountain Cell. This allows for comprehensive risk assessments and the development of a Mountain Situation Plan. Ultimately, the Mountain Cell will provide critical support and advice to commanders, enabling informed decision-making for operations conducted in challenging alpine environments.

Another major focus of the practical exercises was avalanching prevention and mitigation. After thoroughly analysing the current avalanche conditions using standardized testing methods, controlled detonations were carried out on identified avalanche-prone slopes. These operations were conducted using drone-based blasting systems, showcasing a highly effective and safe alternative to traditional manual methods. This practical component highlighted not only the seamless integration of multiple sensor systems but also the operational advantages that new technologies offer in mountainous and complex operational environments.

On the final day of the workshop, all findings were carefully summarized, and key lessons learned were consolidated to guide future efforts and further technological integration.

As a result, MW COE signed two new Letter of Cooperation!

The workshop concluded with the official signing of a Letter of Cooperation between NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence (MWCOE), TIMTEC DEFENSE, and DRONE PASSION. This formal agreement establishes a solid foundation for continued collaboration and development, reinforcing NATO MWCOE’s commitment to fostering innovation and strengthening partnerships with leading industry players in the field of advanced technology for mountain warfare.
