Tihomir Klarić2026-05-21T12:07:28+00:00From 4 to 15 May 2026, the Mountain Warfare Small Unit Leaders Course (SULC) was successfully conducted in Montenegro for members of the Montenegro Armed Forces, contributing to the continued development of NATO interoperability and mountain warfare capabilities in the region.
The course was delivered by a Mobile Education and Training Team (METT) from the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence (MW COE), whose experts formed the core of the instructional staff throughout the activity.
The training program combined theoretical instruction, syndicate work, and practical military mountaineering training, ensuring continuous interaction between students and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). This approach enabled participants to connect doctrinal knowledge with practical application in mountainous terrain.
Throughout the course, students were introduced to key mountain warfare topics, including mountain hazards, mission planning, tactical movement, and operational execution in demanding alpine environments.
The culmination of the course was a demanding two-day field mission rehearsal conducted in the rugged terrain of Durmitor National Park. The field activity provided participants with the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge and skills under realistic operational conditions while operating in complex mountainous terrain.
The professionalism and experience of the instructors, combined with the motivation and commitment demonstrated by the students, created a productive training environment that significantly contributed to the success of the course. The activity once again highlighted the importance of multinational cooperation and specialized mountain warfare education in preparing leaders for operations in challenging environments.
