The course gathered officers from eight NATO allied and partner countries, reinforcing multinational cooperation and operational interoperability in mountain warfare contexts.
The course focused on applying the systematic military planning process in mountainous terrain, with a strong emphasis on innovation. Participants explored and employed new technological solutions designed to support planning in challenging environments—ranging from advanced terrain analysis tools to digital planning platforms.
In alignment with NATO’s evolving operational philosophy, the course incorporated a multi-domain approach, integrating land, air, cyber, space, and informational perspectives into the planning process. This holistic approach reflects NATO’s commitment to adapting military strategies to meet the demands of modern warfare.
A central feature of the course was a reconnaissance mission in a real mountainous area of operations, enabling students to assess key terrain and environmental variables firsthand. This field activity allowed participants to ground their plans in realistic tactical considerations.
To conclude the course, the NATO MW COE staff facilitated a wargaming session, where students tested their proposed Courses of Action (COAs). This exercise provided a platform for critical analysis, peer engagement, and iterative refinement of proposed solutions. The NATO MW COE continues to serve as a leading institution in mountain warfare education and doctrine development, equipping NATO and partner forces with the skills and tools necessary for successful operations in demanding environments.
